Chapter 8 Introduction and Outcomes
Welcome to Chapter 8!
Introduction
First, I would like to introduce you to a new paradigm of conjugation called the “Short Forms"
Our focus will be on:
- Verb Short Forms (present tense), affirmative and negative.(食べる→食べない;よむ→よまない;くる→こない;する→しない)
- Adjectives and noun Short Forms (present tense), affirmative and negative. (かわいい→かわいくない;しずかだ→しずかじゃない;学生だ→学生じゃない)
How to use Short Forms to make :
- casual conversations. (informal speech)(Q: 行く? A: うん、行く/ううん、行かない。)
- quoted speech (“I think that…,~と思います;” “She said…~と言っていました”) (あした雨がふると思います;スーさんは日本に行くと言っていました。)
- expressions such as “I like doing…,” or “I’m good at doing…” by using 「Verb のがすきです/じょうずです」.(日本語をべんきょうするのがすきです.テニスをするのがじょうずです。)
Secondly, we will learn
- how to make negative requests (“Please don’t…") by using ~ないでください (たばこをすわないでください。)
- the particle が. (私が日本人だ/です)
- the words "something" and "anything" by using なにか and なにも.
Also, we'll learn more new vocabulary and kanji
Learning Outcomes
By the end of chapter 8, you should be able to:
- Recognize the importance of the Short Forms in Japanese language and identify where to use the Short Forms in a sentence.
- Use ~と思いますto expressing thoughts and opinions
- Use ~と言っていました for reported speech
- Make negative request
- Identify fifteen more kanji characters and be able to use them in writing, and memorize the new vocabulary.
