Basic Course Information

  • Identifier:           Japan 402
  • Title:                   Elementary Japanese
  • Units:                  4 00
  • Prerequisite:      JAPAN 401 (Elementary Japanese) with a grade of "C" or better.
  • Hours:                72 hours lecture, 144 hours out-of-class work, for a total of 216 student learning hours.
  • Description: In this course, students continue building a solid base of vocabulary and idioms in Japanese. Grammar includes more complex subordinate phrases and clauses. In addition to hiragana, students gain proficiency in the katakana syllabary and learn approximately 50 additional Sino-Japanese characters. Applied linguistic concepts occur within the context of an integrated examination of Japanese cultural and historical reference, reflecting both homogeneous and heterogeneous elements. The study of Japanese within this fertile framework promotes a vital cultural awareness, lending itself to fruitful cross-cultural analysis.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives (SLO's)

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • read and write hiragana, katakana and kanji at an elementary level.
  • recognize the structure of spoken Japanese including subordinate phrases and clauses.
  • demonstrate elementary conversational skills and the ability to write short paragraphs.
  • identify aspects of Japanese culture as they relate to the use of the Japanese language.

Evaluation and Assessment Methods

Are based on weekly quizzes, Zoom class performance, assignments, and the final examination (inclusive of kanji, vocabulary, idioms, grammar).

Quizzes, Test

Each chapter will contain quizzes and tests on vocabulary, kanji and grammar.  Quizzes and tests will be  given on Tuesdays or Thursdays and are due on Wednesdays or Fridays at 11:00 pm.

Homework, Assignments, Zoom Class Participation, Attendance, and Oral Performance

  • Homework, Assignments

Homework will be posted on your Canvas. Please make sure to check your Canvas on a daily basis. You must submit all of your homework on time via Canvas. Late homework will result in the loss of two of the assignment’s points.

  • Zoom Class Participation, Attendance

You will be graded on your Zoom Class performance and participation. To be successful in this class, you will need to login to your Zoom on a regular basis and interact in your Zoom Class. Logging in alone does not constitute attendance. To attend means to be interactive with the content, your classmates, and your instructor. Regular attendance is vital. If you miss more than four classes without providing proof of medical or other extenuating circumstances, you may be dropped from the class.  You are expected to attend all Zoom classes and to be punctual. The last drop date of this course is the 16th of November. Here is  SCC Withdrawal Policy (Links to an external site.)

  • Oral Performance

You are required to memorize model dialogues in each chapter, and perform them in our zoom class. The grading is the followings:

Cheating

Cheating is the act of obtaining or attempting to obtain credit for academic work through the use of dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent means. Cheating includes the following:

  • Copying from someone else's tests or assignments.
  • Submitting work that is not your own.
  • Using the textbook or other material during a test.
  • Consulting with someone during a test.
  • Committing other acts that defraud or misrepresent.

You may learn more at  SCC's Academic Integrity and Responsibility page.

Expectations and Study Guidelines

It is YOUR responsibility to practice new grammar, vocabulary, and kanji outside of our Zoom class as well as to review material learned previously.  Reread the notes in your textbook each day. As you gain command of the material, you will discover points in the notes that you overlooked or that were unclear before. Review and memorize vocabulary EVERY DAY so that you can recall old and new words readily.

In learning languages, you must study in a consistent manner. You must prepare before the class and also review after the class and practice on a daily basis. Study each chapter as follows:

BEFORE CLASS

Go over grammar notes and vocabulary list and get ideas about what you will be learning in class.

AFTER CLASS

  • Carefully review what you learned in class by reading grammar notes and example sentences.
  • Memorize all the vocabulary and sentence patterns.
  • Begin grammar exercises and writing activities in the textbook.
  • Listen to dialogues and activities for the chapter. Do listening comprehension activities.

 KANJI

Plan and make a specific habit of practicing Japanese writing. You should study Kanji every day (e.g. 5-6 かんじ characters every day), and you shouldn’t study ONLY for the tests. It is a lot easier this way.
